BJP says Quota is Un-Islamic
eclaring the Muslim Reservation Bill as unconstitutional, BJP Floor Leader in Telangana State Assembly G. Kishan Reddy on Sunday said that reservations based on religion was rejected by the Constituent Assembly while framing the Constitution.
According to a report published in Deccan Chronicle Mr. Reddy opposed the Bill in the House. He rejected Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s contention that quota Bill was not based on religion. In support of his claim he said that a notification issued by the BC Commission — in newspapers inviting representations from public — had clearly stated that the reservation was intended for Muslims only.
Mr. Reddy further argued that Islam does not subscribe to any castes or group in their religion and found it strange that only the government is finding castes and groups among Muslims. He further claimed that providing reservations is even against Islam. When there is no caste or group in Islam, where is the question of certain groups or castes getting discriminated?
However it must be noted that Muslim quota is linked to religion, but is extended on the basis of backwardness. Although there is no caste system among Muslims but there are socially, educationally and economically-backward Muslims as among Hindus based on vocations that they pursue. Government has time and again mentioned that reservation for Muslims was not being given on the basis of their religion, but on the basis of their backwardness, however BJP is trying to use the issue for political gain.
