Bloodbath in Kashmir: 3 civilians and one militant killed in forces’ firing in Chadoora

Three civilians were killed and many others injured when forces fired on protesters during clashes near an encounter site in Durbugh village of Chadoora town in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Tuesday. A militant was also killed in the gunfight.
The police, paramilitary and army men laid siege around Durbugh village of Chadoora in the wee hours today and launched the search operation.
“During the combing operation, the troops zeroed-in on a residential house, where a militant was hiding. The militant fired on the search party. The fire was returned by the troops, triggering an encounter,” a police official said.
As the gunfight started, hundreds of residents of Durbugh and adjoining villages came out on roads and started marching towards the encounter site. They pelted stones on the force personnel to break the cordon to save hiding militants.
The protesters came from three different locations towards the encounter site and engaged police and paramilitary forces in clashes. The security men fired hundreds of teargas canisters, PAVA shells and also fired pellets to disperse the protesters.
As the clashes intensified, the force personnel fired directly on the protestors, injuring at least 22 people.
The injured youth were evacuated by the locals and rushed to nearby hospital, where from 17 were brought to SMHS hospital in Srinagar.
There critically injured youth identified as Zahid Rashid Ganie son of Abdul Rashid Ganie of Chadoora, Amir, who registered his name in the hospital records as Qaisar Ahmad of Wathoora, Budgam and Ashfaq Ahmad, a resident of Rangreth succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
The slain youth had sustained bullet injuries, the doctors said.
Official sources said some of the injured people were hit by pellets and teargas shells.
They said six policemen were also injured.
Clashes continued between protestors and force personnel in Durbugh and its adjoining areas till late evening.
Chatting pro-freedom, pro-Pakistan and pro-militant slogans, hundreds of locals thronged the house where the militant was killed in the encounter.
Commanding Officer RR 53 Bn, Budgam, A K Nair told Rising Kashmir that a militant holed up in the house was killed in the encounter.
“After the tip-off about militant presence, army along with police and CRPF men launched a joint operation in Chadoora area to track the militants hiding in the village,” he said.
Nair said gunfight erupted after militant hiding in a concrete three-storey house was fired at the search party.
He said during the gunfight, a LeT commander Tauseef Wagay of Kanjikullah, Kulgam was killed.
“A para-trooper was injured in the gunfight and he has been hospitalized,” Nair said.
Sources said troops used IEDs to blast the house. The house caught fire and suffered extensive damage.
SSP Budgam Waseem Qadri told Rising Kashmir that the slain militant was A- category militant and was active from last two years.
“A militant was killed during the encounter while three civilians died during clashes near the encounter site,” he said.
Army Chief General Bipin Rawat had on February 18 said people protesting near gunfight sites should be dealt with sternly.
He had given the statement after protesting civilians from at least five villages in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district had on February 18 hurled stones at troops who had cordoned off Urivan village for search operations, compelling them to call off the operation.
A video from the scene today shows Army men firing indiscriminately while chasing the protesters pelting stones on them.
