Kashmir Day 23: Massive gathering at martyrs’ graveyard

Responding to the pro-freedom leadership’s appeal to visit martyrs’ graveyards on Sunday, thousands of people marched towards the martyrs’ graveyard at Kareemabad in Pulwama district, with reports of 70,000 people assembling at the site from Tral, Awantipora, Kakapora, Newa, Rajpora, Ramhoo, Charsoo and other areas of Pulwama district.

Special arrangements were made by people to provide food and refreshment. Many stalls had been erected to distribute tahri, water, snacks, milk, juices and fruits.
Clashes with government forces continued across the Valley on Sunday. Fierce clashes in Qazigund left six people injured, a man identified as Arif Ahmad hit with pellets in the eye referred to SMHS hospital in the evening.
Clashes were reported from several areas of Anantnag, including KP Road, Iqbalabad, Krumsoo, Ashajipora, Cheeni chowk, and Aishmuqam. At many other places people held peaceful protests and raised pro-freedom, anti-India slogans.
Intense clashes broke out in Sopore town after news spread of a local 17-year-old boy, Tarzoo, having succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS hospital. Angry youth attached troops with stones and came under heavy teargas shelling.
Official sources at SKIMS said that Ishfaq Ahmad Dar, who was “assaulted by government forces on July 23 in Sopore town of Baramulla and was in critical condition since then”, died of his injuries on Sunday morning.
The police have claimed that Ishfaq fell from a tree in Sopore.
People in Imam Sahib area of Shopian, where situation remained tense following yesterday’s firing by forces that left 8 persons injured, three critically, held protest demonstrations against the action. Eight more youths sustained injuries after they fought troops with stones and came under pellet fire and teargas shelling.
Medical superintendent of district hospital Shopian, Dr Nazir Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that eight persons were admitted to the hospital on Sunday.
“Five among the eight have received pellet injuries while the rest have been injured by teargas shells. All of them are stable,” Ahmad said.
Residents of the Imam Sahib area alleged that forces had created a ‘terror’, smashing windowpanes of several houses and beating up dozens of people in the area.
Clashes occurred for the third consecutive day in Tahab area of Pulwama where youth were attacked with teargas and pellets by government forces. Clashes also occurred in Hall area of the district.
A torch procession was taken out in Pampore in the evening with people shouting slogans calling for freedom.
A huge procession was taken out in Anchar after hundreds of people gathered to offer Zuhr prayers in the lawns of Jenab Saheb shrine. The procession was intercepted by police and clashes occurred at Sabzi Market, for several hours.
Zuhr prayers were offered on the road at Srinagar’s Rainawari chowk by hundreds of people as a protest against the government.
A series of protests demonstrations were held in many areas of Kulgam district, among them Hospital Road, Bugam, Nellow, Tobai, Yaripora, Frisal, Redwani, Khudwani, and Qoimoh. People carried posters and flags, shouted anti-India and pro-freedom slogans, and a bike rally went through all these areas encouraging the people to protest.
In main town Kulgam, hundreds of people offered Zuhr prayers on roads as a mark of protest.
Six people were injured in clashes in Khanpora area of Baramulla, where the national highway was also blocked by locals.
People of the area had also held protests the previous night after police raided several homes to arrest youth on charges of stone-pelting. People said that the police attacked the protesters with teargas and pellet guns, injuring six people. They also alleged that the troops thrashed several people and ransacked several homes. A curfew-like situation was witnessed in the town all day.
Late-evening clashes erupted in several areas of Srinagar — Safa  Kadal, Sakidafer, Qamarwari, Nawakadal, Kawadara and downtown areas – where youth hurled stones at the forces deployed in these areas.
