First major snowfall of season in Kashmir plains; Highway closed

Most parts of Kashmir and some areas of Jammu Thursday received fresh snowfall resulting in closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway.
This is the first major snowfall of this winter. The snow and rains broke nearly two-month long dry spell in the state even as Meteorological Department has predicted that weather would improve from Friday.
“Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed for traffic late in the afternoon,” Traffic Police Department officials told Greater Kashmir. They said that Patnitop and Jawahar Tunnel have received heavy snowfall. “Above 250 vehicles are stranded on the highway.”
Officials said that road’s clearance will be started once snowfall stops. They said   earlier in the day landslides occurred at Sherbibi.
“Snow and rains will continue in the state during the next 24 hours,” MeT officials told Greater Kashmir. “During the next 24 hours most of the places in Kashmir will receive snow and rains,” they said adding the improvement in weather will start from Friday evening.
MeT officials said that besides Srinagar, snowfall was recorded in the higher reaches of Kashmir that included ski-resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district, Peer Ki Gali on Mughal Road in Shopian district, Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, Razdan Pass, Sadhna Top and Gurez in north Kashmir.
MeT officials said that Srinagar witnessed 15 mm of rains and snow during the day. They said that Zaberwan range witnessed snowfall and rains since midnight. The minimum temperature in Srinagar, they said, went down over a degree from the previous night’s low of 2.5 degrees Celsius to settle at 1.3 degrees Celsius, they said.
Due to rains and snow, scores of areas of Srinagar were inundated.
Officials said that about 40 cm of fresh snow had been recorded on the ski slopes of Gulmarg since last night. They said that there was moderate to heavy snowfall at Kongdori, Khilanmarg, Affarwat, highest skiing point connected by cable car and other heights in Gulmarg sector.
Reports said that it was snowing heavily in Gulmarg, much to the delight of skiers and other tourists.
MeT officials said that tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded about 8 cm of fresh snow. They said snowfall was going on in the areas on Thursday evening. Kupwara recorded 3 cm, Banihal 4cm and Kokernag 6 cm of snowfall.
Officials said there was a major jump in the minimum temperature at Gulmarg due to cloudy sky which later resulted in snowfall. Against yesterday’s minus 2.2 degree, the minimum temperature was 4.5 degrees, more than ten notches above normal.
He said the night temperature in Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir Valley, settled at a low of 1 degree Celsius compared to the previous night’s 0.2 degree Celsius.
The north Kashmir town of Kupwara recorded a minimum of 0.9 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag town, in south, registered a minimum of 1.3 degrees Celsius. Leh in Ladakh region recorded a minimum of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius – an increase from the previous night’s minus of 6 degrees Celsius.
MeT officials said that Trikuta Hills in the Jammu division also received light snowfall during the night. They said Jammu city recorded 10.6 degrees minimum temperature.

KUPWARA:
Most parts of this frontier district witnessed fresh snowfall which brought some respite from the dry spell.
Reports said that Sadna pass located at 11000 ft height received two feet of fresh snow resulting in closure of Kupwara-Tangdhar road while as Z-Gali of Machil and Farkyan top have also received around 2 feet snow.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara said administration is keeping vigil on the weather conditions and all SDMs and Tehsildars have been directed to get ready to tackle any situation caused due to snowfall.

BARAMULLA:
Moderate to heavy snowfall was witnessed in most parts of this district on Thursday.
Reports from upper reaches of Uri said the area witnessed heavy snowfall since Thursday morning. Several villages in the upper reaches are cut from the main town Uri following snowfall in the area.

SOUTH KASHMIR:
Life was paralyzed in twin districts of Shopian and Pulwama due to heavy snowfall.
Officials said that in Shopian, Peer Ki Gali received 6 feet snow, Dhobijan 5 feet while Hurpora 3 feet. The Mughar road was completely under snow.
Budgam: Plains received rains and snowfall where as upper areas of Budgam received heavy snowfall since Wednesday night that continued till late evening on Thursday.
All the roads connecting Tehsil headquarters of Khag, Khansahab and Chrar remained closed throughout the day.
However, an official said that machines were sent to all the roads for snow clearance. Electricity supply to the upper areas was also affected due to heavy snowfall.
Director General of Police, K. Rajendra, Thursday directed the senior police functionaries in Kashmir to assist the civil administration and the people in snowbound areas to ease the problems of common masses.
