Kashmiri Nadru may not grow in Dal Lake for years: Growers

Kashmiris may not taste Nadru, the most delicious and cherished vegetable, for few years as its roots were damaged in the devastating September 2014 floods.
Nadru grows as a lotus root in the waters of the Dal and other lakes. However, Nadru from Dal Lake has high demand due to its taste and quality.
The Dal dwellers who extract Nadru from their watery lands say this vegetable may not grow for many years.
To extract Nadru from Dal, a Dal farmer use 8-feet long wooden stick which has an iron hook fastened to it (called nadir shom) at one end to haul Nadru.
Today these people earn their livelihood by selling Nadru from other State or other lakes.
“The rising levels of the water after the last year’s floods have dimmed its growth prospects. Nadru seeds (lab kar) produce Nadru, after fishing out a fully developed Nadru, a small Nadru is left behind giving rise to a new Nadru in next season and this procedure continues. But now there are no seeds left, half of them got washed away and half rotted due to floods,” said Muhammad Shafi, a farmer from Dal Lake who is expert in extracting Nadru.
Muhamad Shafi is left with only hope that if government provides seeds to them from fisheries department of Manasbal.
“Then only Dal dwellers can hope of having the Dal Nadru again. If not then they have to move to Gurdaspur (Punjab) to buy seeds.”
As the Lotus leaves (Khel Wathar) are also present at Gandarbal, Mansbal, Sangam, Zinmur the bundle of Nadru costs Rs 250 per kilogram. The rates of Nadru cultivated from other lakes also go at Rs 250 to Rs 300.
“When floods hit the dal, pamposh (flower of Nadru) was at highest peak if the flood would have come after 15 days we may have seeds to continue with it. It finished the seeds of Nadru, “said Mohammad shafi.
Mohammad Rafiq, a vegetable seller said the season for Nadru production is from September 21 to June 20. “We would cultivate Nadru in large numbers and supply to city market and other markets in Valley.”
Nadru grows in wetlands and swamps under water and then sprouts into a lotus flower between huge leaves of at least a feet of diameter.
Dal dwellers have been cultivating Nadru from centuries. A large chunk of population from Dal Lake is associated with Nadru cultivation. However, after the floods, their livelihood got affected.
“Before floods one Kanal of land gave 200 to 250 bundles of Nadru. It would fetch us Rs 25,000 for one Nadru crop. We sold it at Rs 100 to Rs 200. Now Nadru from Jammu and from other states are being imported here and they cost only Rs 80,”said Rouf Ahmed, another Nadru seller.
He said 95 percent of the Nadru crop has vanished. Before floods, the market rate of Nadru was Rs 150 and presently it has doubled to Rs 250 to Rs 300 cultivated from other lakes.
SKUAST authorities however denied any role in Nadru production in Dal Lake.
“We have no connection and there is no project related to Nadru production,” said Mohammad Yusuf Zargar, Dean Agriculture Departement of SKUAST-K.
The Dal dwellers have urged the government to intervene so that Nadru regains its lost position as far its production is concerned.
